Cultural problems between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have killed millions, displaced millions more and continue to torment the region in 2007.

The Great Lakes Region of Africa had one of the bloodiest acts of genocide ever seen on the planet. 800,000 Tutsis and Hutu sympathizers were killed over a 100-day rampage in 1994. Now the world has put those figures into the annals of history; but it’s not over. The carnage never ended it just shifted sides. Tutsis went from victims to perpetrators and are killing Hutus by the millions.

1994 Rwandan Genocide Continues

The recent outbreak is merely a continuation of the 1994 conflict which saw such a massive loss of life. Made famous by movies (Shooting Dogs & Hotel Rwanda) the West is sensitive to its previous inaction and is more involved than in 1994.

Recall that the majority Hutu population of Rwanda went on a killing spree after the death of Hutu President Juvenal Habyarimana. The minority Tutsi population was systematically rounded up and slaughtered in a killing binge that lasted over three months. The ineffectual Belgian UN force did nothing for the Tutsi people and allowed the genocide to continue. Eventually the Tutsi forces regained control and pushed the Hutu band into neighboring DRC.

Rwanda had taken the offensive and invaded the Eastern part of the DRC in 1996-1997, 1999-2003, & 2004. Committing their share of atrocities, the Tutsi-lead Rwandan government must be held accountable as they continue to exploit border areas in 2007. However, the DRC, a Hutu government, has allowed the remnants & descendants of the Rwandan Hutus (FDLR), who orchestrated the genocide in 1994, to roam across the boarder as well.

Unlike the Janjaweed Militia in Darfur’s Genocide, the FDLR is a highly-organized fighting corps. As Mark Doyle said in a November 23rd 2004 BBC News report: “According to a well-informed military analyst in this region, the Hutu FDLR…are in fact a well-organized unit with impressive military command and control. ‘They're one of the most effective armies in this region’ said the military analyst, who asked not to be named."

Racial Classification

Before the colonization of Rwanda at the end of the 18th century, the three groups (Tutsi, Hutu and Twa) were social groups rather than ethnic groups. In the past you were a Hutu if you were in agriculture and a Tutsi if you had cattle. If you changed from farming to herding, you changed from Hutu to Tutsi.

In 1926 the Belgians abolished the local posts of "land-chief" and in doing so stripped the Hutu of their limited power. Belgians attempted to divide groups based upon race and migratory patterns, but by this time the groups had intermarried, changed ethnic groups and possessed similar features. Subsequently, the Belgian’s method of classification was based on cattle. Ten or more cattle made the owner an aristocratic Tutsi.

Dividing the people is wrong. Every one has right to live and right to protest, right to talk, right to be in politics this is nothing but ALL ARE EQUAL....IF ALL ARE EQUAL then such incidents will never happen in any part of the world.

The problem is imperialism, and the inablity to seperate. If the Belgians and French had not imperialized Rwanda, the genocide could have been prevented.

there are certain people that can not live together so it is better to seperate them.they should give them more time to chill. later if they want to be together then they can. they should teach the children at school to accept everyone like that they can make a generation who can accept everyone

Well personally some dont deserve to live. Your telling me a person who molestes children deserves to continue his/her life? REALL? i think.. not.. Ther should punishment by firing squad for such people. a death only fit for them. So... NO not all people deserve the life they have been granted. maybe some. but i belive in widespread murder. i hate everyone equally. not because they are white, black, spanish, jewish, catholic, cristian. i hate everyone because they are discusting people.

but the fact of the matter is that people will never be able to view themselves as equal to others because each person has different beliefs of the way things should be done.

Granted they are all equal but if you knew the conflicts that go back for generations then you would understand (I'm not condoning what happened I'm just bringing more fact into this)... and they didnt seperate them by cattle it was by nose size (larger width on the nose Hutu, smaller width Tutsi)... it was and still is wrong but until other countries get involved (Canada, U.S., etc.)the genoside will continue for more generations to come and more people will be slaughtered

What those poor people had to deal with every second of their life is absolutely heart wrenching, not even knowing if they were even gonna make it through day because their situations were so tough. My heart goes out to all the victims in Hotel Rwanda. No one has the right to take another person’s life. And the violence proves nothing but the degradation of humanity.

Recently I saw this movie, Attack on Darfur, at the NY film festival and realize that Darfur needs as much attention as it can possibly get. I myself had no idea how bad it was until I saw this movie which is a very real portrayal of the horror going on there. Even some of the actors are actual people from Darfur reenacting their actual raping and torturing. I cried so hard, but I'm glad I saw it cause it really opened my eyes to what's going there.

This is a very charged article but nonetheless, right in expressing criticism against the brutal effects colonization had on Rwanda. After reading this, one must think of all the other countries that had been colonized and how they have also been affected in the West's conquest for power.
It was a tragedy that the international community took so long to realize the atrocities that had been taking place. Often times the indigenous people of the third world are shunned because of ignorance and lack of knowledge, which is not entirely an individual's fault considering how much the media tends to censor from our eyes. Regardless, stay aware!

People of the three living clans were hapily life but it is wrong for Belgian by geliously dividing the group to live different from eachg-other. this is everyone's world we should never divid people because of their colour or believes.

So far ethnicity division has posed negative consequences to Africa society integration.

i think its wrong that the tutsi's had to go through all of this. people need to stop creating wars and create peace. the pres. was about to go sign a peace treaty between the hutu and tutsi, then the hutu decided to kill the pres. because they didn't want to be in peace with the tutsi. so they decided to kill the pres. and kill all of the tutsi that were followed behind. they killed 800,000 tutsi within 100 days. thats ridiculous! thank god that paul rusesabagina was the temporary manager of the mille collines during this time because he save over 1,000 peoples lives! he save 1,268 lives to be exact! he is a true hero. we need peace between every country in the world so nothing in our life will arm anyone or anything.
thanks, mal(:

Not very helpful. Could you give a bit more information on how the genocide occurred, who was responsible and what their justification was. That would be more helpful for projects.
